Commentary on the film

The film can be read on two levels: the story of a young boy who escapes his boredom through imagination, and the portrait of a rural region of Quebec. Death is omnipresent in the background – the hare, the fish, the bear: all the animals in the story die – and accompanies the gradual maturation of the child in the face of loss. Doyon intentionally left the last scene (the plant and the snow) open to the viewer's interpretation. Produced in traditional paper animation, with a desaturated palette of grays and blues chosen to match the melancholic tone of the film, as part of the Hothouse program of the National Film Board of Canada.
