On the initiative of the French School of Florence, the "Films pour enfants" association created an online festival during the 2020 lockdown to let children stay in touch with their teachers but also to get in touch with other children and explore cultural diversity through universal values and messages such as humanism, ecology and poetry.

The children's film festival, under the patronage of UNESCO, benefits from the support of international partners such as UNODC as part of its Education for Justice (E4J) initiative and the Global Alliance for Partnerships on Media and Information Literacy (UNESCO MIL ALLIANCE), led by UNESCO. Institut français, Serge Tisseron's 3-6-9-12 association, Citia and Réseau Canopé are also partners and helped select the 2021 films.

Takorama 2021 International Children's Film Festival
Takorama also benefits from the support of the 3-6-9-12 association, founded by Serge Tisseron, which reflected on and approved the age classification of festival films.
A selection guide for short films to match content to children's ages was also developed in collaboration with the association.
Many festivals are dedicated to children, feature film or short film festivals, animated film festivals, competitive or non-competitive.

Some like Chicago or New York have more than 30,000 viewers per year; others are much smaller with just a few hundred viewers, but all share the same mission: to showcase quality films.

The festival's objective is to offer children around the world free access to auteur animated short films in an educational context.
The short films are accompanied by activities to enable educational follow-up.
The festival also has the underlying objective of affirming the educational dimension of cinema by positioning it alongside literature and painting as a resource capable of supporting and enhancing every subject (visual arts, language arts, moral and civic education, mathematics...). The festival will also enable children to develop critical thinking and to consider animated images, beyond entertainment, as a communication tool.
The festival, very simple in its form, offers an introduction to visual literacy for everyone who works with children, who can then build on the experience through various programmes such as École et cinéma.
The festival for teachers and their students is entirely free and advertisement-free.
The festival runs from March to June to give teachers the necessary time to propose educational activities to their students.
Each teacher registers their class and proposes educational activities to their students following the screening of films. In a positive spirit, each child votes for their favourite film, gives their opinion and shares with others.
Students discover the films at home and participate in educational activities at school. The festival makes possible conversations at home and classroom activities using a playful format. A selection committee, made up of representatives from partners and filmmakers, selects the short films.
The festival is also open to other educational, cultural and social institutions such as libraries and hospitals; parents can also register their children directly.

Each child, after watching the films and taking part in the educational activities, votes for their favourite film.

In 2020, 270,000 children participated and awarded the "children's prize" in each of the festival's categories.
In 2021, 340,418 participants: 10,161 teachers, 4,092 parents and 326,165 children (303,190 at school and 22,975 at home) from 115 countries participated in the festival, France representing 77% of global participation.
