A very original idea, a film of great poetry. A very beautiful allegory of life.
A meeting quickly becomes more complicated than one can imagine. We must then learn to make compromises to protect each other.
Understand the story and themes, express your feelings and develop critical thinking.
1What is the theme of the film?
Friendship, difference, the difficulty of meeting and knowing others, the difference in the nature of beings. Is it possible for beings of different natures to live together?
2What is the genre of the film?
It is a fiction similar to a story. Imaginary, marvelous and symbolic. In literature, the tale is distinguished from the novel by its acceptance of the implausibility of the marvelous genre. Once upon a time... then everything becomes natural, obvious.
3What is the role of the seasons in the film?
The seasons, used metaphorically, allegorically, allow us to express the difference in nature of the two characters. Spring and summer for the little girl and fall and winter for the little boy. The allegory and the metaphor represent an abstract notion, such as a character, a quality, a defect, in a concrete way and the use of the seasons, in particular by the incompatibility between spring which can make us think of life and winter which can make us think of death, makes it possible to depict the difference in nature of the two characters and the difficulty they have in understanding each other, knowing each other and living together. The use of seasons also helps to support the psychology of the characters. When the little boy takes the initiative and the little girl hesitates or flees the situation, winter takes over. When the little girl voluntarily decides to join the little boy, spring reappears. The metaphor of the seasons thus allows us to understand the psychology of the characters only with the landscape.
4Describe the feelings of the characters in each scene?
Use words that you think best fit the psychology of the characters. For example: Surprise, worry, fear, curiosity, distrust, pride, sadness, joy, nervousness, despair, impatience... To be perplexed, disconcerted, disoriented, discouraged, desperate comforted...
5How would you interpret the ending of the film?
The ending of the film remains open to interpretation. The two figures circle around a tree in a seemingly endless round. The difference in nature between the girl and the boy has not changed; the tree is separated into seasons which evolve to the rhythm of this round; the boy and the girl, each on their side of the tree, are never together on the same side. Or have they found a balance? Is this living together? Keep your own particularities and respect those of others. Debate/open responses.
