The short film “Appearance and Reality” was integrated into the Canopé course on appearances, the objective of which is to provoke reflection on the way we see others. Our society gives great importance to image. Our idea of others begins with their appearance. Getting out of this straitjacket which sometimes erases our feelings, our sensitivity to better understand and accept others is at the heart of this idea of “living well together”: tolerance, respect...
The objective of the debate is to get the student to question and challenge their initial judgments. This reflective debate can be done orally through a discussion with a philosophical aim both in its approach and in the learning it involves. “Moral and civic education is primarily concerned with understanding rules and the law.” (BO, Nov. 2015). This ties in with the idea of respect for others, for what they are or what they show. Thus, the four films lend themselves to debates on this question: are we what we think we show?
Viewing of the film and first discussion on the notion of appearance and its importance. Does appearance reveal who we really are? Set up an arrangement: one film per group, which reports back what it understood, then a confirmation viewing by the class.
First debate: Is appearance important to express who we are or should it be erased to reveal our true personality?
Second possible debate: Does the reputation of a person, of their profession, harm their true personality?
