Educational activities

Instrumental games and activities in the motor skills room.

In this film, the music, an essential element, sets the cadence of the characters; the pace is quite fast; the little characters move quickly and move in all directions!

The band's piece of music from "King Biscuit" is called "come on in my kitchen" (references are indicated on the first disc at the beginning of the video). We can compare the version of the film with a live version of “come on in my kitchen” whose tempo is even faster.

In the motor skills room, ask the children to spread out and occupy the space. Play the music and ask them to clap their hands to the beat while doing it with them. Then ask them to walk to the beat. If everyone follows the tempo correctly, we will hear all the footsteps at the same time!

Alternate the music used in the video and the live version; the children will have to adapt to the change in tempo. Having them verbalize: it’s faster/slower...

Then offer them the role of conductor. The teacher hits different parts of the body following the pulse, and the children must follow. When they understand, ask a student to be the conductor, then change the leader regularly. Rework these different instructions over several sessions, and, when the children have assimilated, make three groups: body percussion/hit the beat/walk on the beat. When everyone is in rhythm, place the body percussion in the center, one circle around walking to the beat, and one circle around standing still and hitting the beat.

We can reinvest this work in a dance for the end of year show.
