Understand the difference in size of planets.
Representing something allows you to look at it differently but also to understand it better and remember its characteristics. Make the planet Earth out of papier-mâché or modeling clay, taking into account elements such as the proportion between water and land, the position of the continents, the main mountainous features.
Earth is called the blue planet because 70% of its surface is covered in water. Fresh water represents only 2.53% of all water on the planet. However, the volume of water (1 billion km3) represents only 0.1% of that of the Earth.
The activity can be extended by comparing the sizes of the planets. Make balls of paper representing the planets of our solar system. The diameter of Jupiter (142,984 km) is 11 times larger than that of Earth (12,756 km).
Did you know that there are 5 dwarf planets, Eris, Pluto, Makemaké, Hauméa and Ceres? Venus is 48 million km from the Earth and if we represent the Earth with a diameter of 1.2 cm (scale 1/10,000), we would have to position Venus at 48 meters.
