Solids

Session 1 To initiate work on plane and solid shapes and highlight the distinction between the two, students will first watch the entire film and express themselves freely on the content. On the second viewing, they will be asked to focus on the characters and their shapes as well as the other shapes that we encounter in the video.

Question the students on their knowledge of these shapes. Ask them to name what they recognize. Freeze the frame if necessary. Show thumbnails of each figure separately (6 thumbnails). Ask the students to classify the figures into 2 groups, justifying their choice. Expected answers: plane figures on one side, solid figures on the other. Continue by working on the concept of solid and its definition by providing solids (wood or cardboard). “A solid is a geometric shape which has a thickness, which occupies a volume”. Name the different solids. Observe them to detail the vocabulary: edge, vertex, face.

Possible games to encourage memorization:

• Hide game: Arrange the solids on a table or on the board. Ask to close your eyes and remove a solid. Students must name the missing one.
• Portrait game: Make a portrait of a solid. The students must find out which solid it is. The solids are visible to everyone, placed on a table.
• Kim game: Place a solid (preferably wooden) in a bag or box. A student reaches into the bag, describes the solid to his classmates and tries to name it.
