Educational activities

Transform a video into a comic book with dialogue and onomatopoeia writing.

Based on this very humorous video, we can offer students work on onomatopoeia. To do this, you will have to start with a comic book reading sequence. Offer a page to the students, ask them to describe it: the illustrations, the characters, the legends, the dialogue bubbles, and the onomatopoeia. What can onomatopoeia be used for? It is a word that represents a noise. If necessary look up the definition in the dictionary. Ask students if they know of any others. Then do some identification work in the comic strip: look for the onomatopoeia and list them, then note what noise they correspond to.

To familiarize themselves with the concept, we can offer students exercises aimed at associating onomatopoeia with the corresponding noises. We can ask them to make a drawing based on an onomatopoeia and then conversely to find an onomatopoeia that goes with a proposed drawing. Editions de la Gouttière offer a “turnkey” sheet on onomatopoeia based on the comic strip “Enola”.

After this preliminary work, it will be time to watch the video. The idea will be to offer children images from the video. They will have to imagine the thoughts of the inspector, the dialogues between the characters at the end and insert onomatopoeia when possible. There will be plenty of opportunities! So the students will transform extracts from the video into comic strips!

Other extensions

  • Read the different versions of the boards in class and compare the productions.
  • Plan group work to process the entire video to produce an entire comic strip and read it in other classes.
  • Working in parallel with the stripsody of Cathy Berberian: opera singer who had fun with onomatopoeia.
  • Complete sequence to find on the site: The fruits of Azraelle's AZ'art.
