Educational activities

Turn a video into a comic by writing dialogue and onomatopoeia.

Based on this very humorous video, we can have students work on onomatopoeia. To do this, we start with a comic-reading lesson. Give the students a comic page, ask them to describe it: the illustrations, the characters, the captions, the speech bubbles, and the onomatopoeia. What can onomatopoeia be used for? It is a word that represents a sound. If necessary look up the definition in the dictionary. Ask students if they know of any others. Then hunt through the comic: find the onomatopoeia, list them, and note which sound each one stands for.

To help students become familiar with the concept, we can give them exercises that match onomatopoeia with the corresponding sounds. We can ask them to make a drawing based on an onomatopoeia and then conversely to find an onomatopoeia that goes with a given drawing. Editions de la Gouttière offer a ready-to-use worksheet on onomatopoeia based on the comic strip “Enola”.

After this preliminary work, it will be time to watch the video. The idea is to give the children stills from the video. They will have to imagine the thoughts of the inspector, the dialogue between the characters at the end, and add onomatopoeia wherever possible. There will be plenty of opportunities! So the students will turn clips from the video into comics!
