Emilie and the magic pencil. What makes Lila special is that she brings her drawings into the real world. Her drawings come to life and blend in with what is already there. This short film echoes the work “Émilie and the Magic Pencil” by Henriette Bichonnier published in 1979. Émilie is a little girl who loves the Middle Ages and who, one day, discovers a magic pencil that talks, and gives life to what it draws...
First, students will watch the entire video and share their thoughts freely about it. On the second viewing, we will ask them to focus on what is special about the main character: what does she do? Students can see the magical, poetic side of the main character's work: what she draws comes true; her pencil is magical.
Present the book to them: “Émilie is a little girl passionate about history, particularly the Middle Ages. And she is very disappointed when Madame Remuffat, the teacher, interrupts the story of the adventures of Messire Robert de Franche Comté just as the bell rings to signal the end of the lesson. Intrepid and independent, Émilie does as she pleases. When she discovers a pencil that talks, it doesn't scare her at all. On the contrary, she is eager to test the powers it claims to have.” Plan different ways of studying the book as a guided read, depending on the students' level. Some pupils can be given the full chapters to read independently; for others, the text will be read aloud by a classmate or the teacher and, finally, for the youngest and the weakest readers, we will offer a summary of some chapters so that they can follow the story.
