Problem solving.
Once the film has been watched, the children can share their thoughts about the game our two characters want to play (what is this game called, what is the goal of this game, who could explain the rules?)
Teachers can thus begin a teaching unit on checkers.
After watching the film, children will be asked to describe the image opposite by answering a series of questions.
This first activity aims to establish a vocabulary common to the class in relation to the game of checkers (board, black pieces, white pieces). Students who already know this game are then invited to write, as shared writing, dictating to the teacher, the rules of the game which will be displayed and read together as a class. If necessary, download the rules of the checkers game...
Once the rules of the game have been established, the students will play against each other to get to know the game, in small groups or as a whole class. Meanwhile, the teacher will have made a large board (or will display it on the interactive whiteboard) in order to present to the class situations that call for thought or working out a strategy.
The sequence can then lead to setting up a mini-tournament and/or teaching the game to other classes using the rules the students have passed on.
