The short film “One More Beer” was integrated into the Canopé course on appearances, the objective of which is to provoke reflection on the way we see others. Our society gives great importance to image. Our idea of others begins with their appearance. Getting out of this straitjacket which sometimes erases our feelings, our sensitivity to better understand and accept others is at the heart of this idea of “living well together”: tolerance, respect...
In groups, students will be able to work on the representation of the Viking and, more generally, on that of the “barbarian” in art where its image is often shaped and reworked for particular ends. They will be shown a range of images, from the proud and courageous Gaul of Lionel Royer to the bloodthirsty barbarian of the paintings of Eugène Delacroix (Attila, etc.).
Commentary on the work: from these chosen works of art, each pupil can write about the character and how it is portrayed on the one hand, and about the historical reality on the other. The written pieces can be displayed alongside the artwork and used for discussion and exhibitions.
Watch “One More Beer” and complete the idea that representation matters a lot in one’s idea of a character. Behind the Viking's apparent roughness lie refinement and a certain delicacy. This is again a blatant caricature.
