Describe the city

Approach the question from different points of view. Firstly, for example, you can approach the theme of perceiving the city from the point of view of its overall rhythm. Is it relaxing or rather tiring and for what reasons? Ask the children to describe the city in the film and compare it to the city or village they live in or to places they have already been.

Then, to go into detail, you can talk with the children about the soundscape of cities. Why not start by asking them to list the different sounds that we hear at the start of the film (the sound environment is very rich, music, crowd noise, machines, etc.) In the same way, you can ask them about the sounds they hear near their homes and which ones they like more or less.

Another interesting angle is the sun and light. In the film, we never see direct light; in our cities, depending on the different heights of buildings, the sun is more or less hidden.

You can also mention the presence of vegetation which plays a major role in how we perceive our cities as illustrated by the 2 photos on the sheet.

How lively or busy a city is makes another interesting angle.

All these different aspects and points of view on the city should allow children to understand and express what they do or don't like in a city, to understand why they feel comfortable or not in a given neighbourhood... (sound environment, vegetation, calm or bustle...)
