Commentary: Head
In the first images, Head sets the scene and presents his character (a sort of half-child robot, with a dinosaur tail) in a fairly classic way, in an atmosphere vaguely reminiscent of the world of the first manga. But we quickly realize that something is wrong with the action. This, centered on the robot, accumulates without explanation the spectacle of transformation processes (ingesting, evacuating, blowing, distilling, etc.), which repeat or respond to each other in echoes, accentuating the idea of circularity, until the last images loop over those at the beginning. It is therefore a kind of choreography, repetitive to the point of being almost hypnotic, the symbol of which could be the traditional sign of American barbers (exported to Japan, where we encounter it a lot), as it is shown in passing in the film: the spiral cylinder.
If this choreography is not immediately perceptible, it is because Head is full of small details which attract attention and testify to the authors' pleasure in creating a hybrid cartoon universe, imbued with the inventiveness of the beginnings of comics. We could almost say that Head is the cross between the abstract comic trips of George Herriman and the mangas of Osamu Tezuka – Krazy Kat meets Astro the little robot. Added to these references in Head is the mix between hand drawing (claimed in the credits) and digital animation. Soft objects and sharp shapes, organic and mechanical, in color or black and white, divide, intersect and create a fanciful and playful universe.
Head is indeed a graphic game, but not a closed game: one of those which communicate the possibility of renewed invention of drawing.
Questions about the film: Head
Understand the story and themes, express your feelings and develop critical thinking.
1Who is the main character?
A dog.
2What places does he pass through?
A black empty space, a door then a ladder which leads, through the clouds, to a diving board. The dog dives into a bowl of soup and lands on a table in a Japanese restaurant. The chopsticks, sushi, edamame (Japanese soy beans) are the elements that allow you to understand that this is a Japanese restaurant. On a plane then again in the restaurant. A rocket in space then a Japanese train (we can see the text on the train. Shibuya station (one of the largest stations in Tokyo). Buildings, certainly in Tokyo, then the interior of an apartment. A street.
3How does the main character move?
He teleports from door to door.
4Imagine the rest of the story. What will be the next imaginary world?
