Commentary: Un carré pour la Biodiversité
An adorable little girl in a setting full of poetry to address the theme of ecology and environmental protection with your children or students. A very nice educational support.
This short film is a magnificent initiative from the CPIE (Heritage Study and Discovery Center) of Périgord–Limousin to allow children to understand the importance of preserving biodiversity. Not just that of the North Pole or the bottom of the oceans, but also that of "ordinary nature", the nature that surrounds us every day and which conceals an equally spectacular world.
The film, part of Un Carré pour la Biodiversité, is an operation marked Observatoire Local de la Biodiversité® by the National Union of CPIE, which notably invites people to create their own small ecosystem by keeping a grassy area for an entire growing season without human intervention. This allows, for the delight of young and old, to discover the flora and animal species that have developed naturally.
The CPIE du Périgord–Limousin is an association created in 1994 with the aim of promoting the natural and cultural heritage of the region, in particular by organizing discovery classes and educational activities for schools (nursery, primary, middle and high schools).

Questions about the film: Un carré pour la Biodiversité
Understand the story and themes, express your feelings and develop critical thinking.
1Where does the little girl live?
In a house near a flowering tree.
2At the beginning of the film, where is the little girl resting?
On the branch of the tree.
3Who is resting on the little girl's head?
A white butterfly.
4Who wakes up the little girl?
A spider.
5And when she falls from the branch, what does she discover?
Ants.
6Do you think the little girl likes all these little animals?
Yes, she draws a heart on the ant's back and plays with the butterflies and the bees. She also draws them in her notebook.
7What happens at 1:55 of the film?
A gardener starts a lawnmower.
8Why is the little girl scared?
The mower will destroy the environment of small animals and scare them away.
9The little girl has an idea (light bulb above her head at 3:03); What is his idea?
She decides to demarcate a plot of garden that must not be touched: she calls it: a square for biodiversity (do not touch).
10What happens if we don't touch the garden plot?
The grass grows back naturally and the small animals return.
11Do you think this is possible?
Yes, not acting on nature allows an ecosystem and associated plant and animal species to develop naturally. Human intervention is not necessary: no need to plant or bring insects, nature does it very well on its own.
