A beautifully animated film about magic that also recalls a mime show. One of the few short films in our selection for young children on the theme of loneliness and exclusion.

1Why aren't the spectators amazed by the magician's tricks?
Because they have seen the tricks many times before. Because they don't look magical.
2What is magic?
When something happens that cannot be explained rationally. When someone makes it seem like that.
3Who does the magic tricks: the magician or his hat?
We expect it to be the magician, who uses a trick. But in the film, we see that he is surprised by what the hat does on its own.
4Is the magician like the other passers-by or different? Does this change over the course of the film?
He looks like the others, but no one looks at him (and he needs that look to live). Little by little people turn away from him.
5Where does the film take place? At what time of day? How do we know?
In a street or public space in town (street furniture). It’s the end of the day (lengthening shadows).
6Are the character’s emotions easy to read? How do we understand them?
We can understand his hope, his joy, his disappointment, his irritation, his surprise, etc. thanks to his facial features and his gestures.
7Does the ending of the film explain anything?
No. The character simply transforms and leaves. But everyone can imagine a reason.
8What does the magician share with Charlie Chaplin (the Tramp), Buster Keaton and Oliver Hardy?
They are somewhat clumsy, solitary characters, who often live on the streets and are mocked by others.
